A survey in 2017 found that 56% of active Christians in the UK came to saving faith before the age of 11. If we miss childhood, then our churches will never recover. The same survey found that the bulk of those leaving our churches will do so between 11 and 24 years old. It is not that our ministry goes off the rails in this period, but instead their foundations of faith were never adequately built. The study of child development confirms this: We know that children’s moral framework is built by the age of 9 and their spiritual framework by the age of 13. It is vital that we give our children the spiritual foundations to see them through their inevitable doubts and struggles.
These statistics only tell us what the Bible has always taught us, if only we had taken more notice.
Start children off on the way they should go,
And even when they are old they will not turn from it.
We must make progress in developing a lifelong faith in our youngest children and in supporting the parents in our churches to take primary spiritual responsibility for their children.
This session will be aimed at those training for (or already in) church leadership positions, to give them an appreciation of the priority of reaching the younger generation with the Gospel and some tools to allow them to do so.
